HPSV is short for High pressure sodium vapour type of lamps. There are two types of lamps under the sodium vapour lamps category mainly, high pressure and Low pressure. Both types of lamps are used in applications like lighting on streets and similar open areas.High pressure lamps are more advanced than low pressure lamps and have a light which is more suitable for applications as mentioned earlier. Construction of a HPSV lamps consist of a high pressure glass tube made up of aluminium oxide ceramic materials which are resistant towards corrosive effects imparted by some elements. This arc tube consists of gases like sodium, xenon and mercury. The lamp can be started by means of a pulse start method. A high voltage pulse is generated inside the ignitor and is sent across the gas which starts an arc. Due to this, mercury vapours present in the tube lights up, imparting the lamps a bluish tinge. Finally sodium inside the lamp vaporises emitting white light.
The only downside of the lamp can be the inclusion of sodium and mercury elements. A proper disposal of the lamps is required as both sodium and mercury can be hazardous if improperly disposed.
